Enduring Quality

Life moves faster than it did in 1853. Building a Steinway piano doesn't.

Steinway pianos are built to last for generations, and do. In a year-long process, two hundred artisans handcraft each Steinway to an uncompromising standard. A standard Steinway has continuously raised.  Today, more than one hundred patents, and fewer that 1,000 construction features unmistakably identify a Steinway as a Steinway.  Only the highest grade woods are selected for their unique characteristics and function. Hard rock maple for the rim and wrest plank. Sitka Spruce for the soundboard. Birch for the legs. Eight different species in all.  The patented Diaphragmatic soundboard gently tapers from 8 mm. at the center to 5 mm. at the edge, creating freer, more unified vibration and resounding power. Seven layers of maple set at 45 and 90 degree angles to one another assure that Steinway's Hexagrip pinblock provides longer lasting tuning.

The uncompromising attention to quality and craftmanship creates a sound, touch and longevity unattainable by any other piano. And, it explains Steinway's enduring value and legendary history of financial appreciation: a 25-year-old Steinway grand piano can command a price 4.3 times higher than its original purchase price.

"Steinway & Sons refuses to skimp in the construction of a musical instrument that is as close to perfection as the hand and cunning of man can make it."
